MN Kings F.C. and STMA United S.C. Announce Groundbreaking Cooperative
ST. MICHAEL-ALBERTVILLE, M.N. – The MN Kings Football Club (Kings) and St. Michael-Albertville United S.
C. (STMA) announced today the start of an unprecedented cooperative that combines the Kings National
Premier Soccer League (NPSL) organization with one of Minnesota’s top youth soccer clubs.
The Kings’ first year goal was to begin to build a fan base and reach out to the Minnesota soccer
communities by playing league and exhibition games in and around the Twin Cities. The result of this
endeavour was favourable to the STMA community, bringing over 400 people together to watch an exhibition
game.
St. Michael-Albertville Director of Coaching, Roger Derham, said, “We were very pleased with the success of
the Kings game. To see so many people come out to watch a game of soccer in our community was truly
fantastic. Based on the results of this event, it was evident that we had to do more to provide for our
members. By positioning ourselves with the Kings, we are able to expose our members to a high level of live
soccer on a regular basis.
In addition, the Kings will offer coaches clinics/training, player appearances, and players will work with St.
Michael-Albertville teams. Moreover, all the Kings Academy Programs (U5-U18) will be available to our
members without the additional travel that comes with supplemental training, as STMA will host these
programs. The Kings Academy will register all players through U.S. Club Soccer, not MYSA, which eliminates
the worry of being “recruited.” With their U14-U18 teams, Kings Academy only hosts one team at each age
group and gender to create a true elitist program. STMA members now have direct access to an elite
program that can take them all the way to the top, from U5 all the way to the Kings professional team. No
other youth soccer club in Minnesota can offer this.”
St. Michael-Albertville includes approximately 1,200 registered youth soccer players, making up nearly 120
teams (94 recreational team and 26 travel teams). With the STMA and Kings affiliation, this soccer
cooperative totals around 4,000 players, coaches, officials, parents, volunteers and supporters.
Demonstrating the Kings’ commitment to STMA soccer, the Kings plan to upgrade the Community Education
field in St. Michael, the Kings’ home field. Kings Owner, Tim Haselberger, said, “the best game we have
experienced this season was in STMA. The facilities and infrastructure within STMA and their soccer
community are second to none. The STMA community has welcomed the Kings from day one. It was easy
decision to “give back”. I hope to turn the Community Education field into one of the top soccer fields in the
state. I plan to do this by investing funds in field enhancements and stadium infrastructure. Through these
upgrades, the Kings hope to provide an even more exciting soccer experience for our fans.”
In addition to the men’s National Premier Soccer League team, Tim Haselberger plans to purchase a women’
s team that will play in the Women’s Premier Soccer League and wear the Kings’ colors. St. Michael-
Albertville Club President, Annette Greely, said, “this helped seal the deal. Two-thirds of our players in
STMA are girls, so having a girls’ professional team in STMA is very exciting.” Tim Haselberger added,
“adding a women’s team is the logical step forward. We will be the only women’s professional soccer team in
Minnesota. I expect this team to be very strong. There are so many women that play at a high level with
their collegiate teams and do not have a team to play for in the summer. We will be able to pick from the top
22-26 players in Minnesota. This team will be very strong and to all that are involved, it will be a very exciting
season for the Kings and STMA.”
St. Michael-Albertville is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The mission of STMA is to
promote the game of soccer for all youth in St. Michael, Albertville, and surrounding areas. We promote the
importance of education, self-esteem, diversity and teamwork in a safe, fun environment, allowing players to
develop to their fullest potential in soccer and in life.
